Did you feel a little confused the last time you visited a hairstylist? If you are unfamiliar with hairstyling terms, you may not understand everything your stylist suggests. Learning these terms can help you understand more about your hair and how your hairstylist can make it look as fabulous as possible:
Highlights and Lowlights
You can add dimension to your hair with highlights and lowlights. Your hairstylist can take portions of hair and make them lighter than your natural color to add highlights. They can also take portions of hair and make them darker than your natural color to add lowlights. Both treatments add dimension to hair that might otherwise have seemed dull or drab. There are many methods now for doing this and often are done besides an all over or base color especially when your natural color growing in needs grey coverage or is a completely different color than the rest of your hair because of previous color or sun lightening. A thorough consultation with your stylist will help you both to understand what is best.
Layering
Hair that is all one length can appear boring or flat, which is why hairstylists often add layering when cutting hair. Hairstylists separate the hair into sections, Layering can let you keep your hair’s length while also adding volume and helping you avoid the weighed-down look of hair that is all one length. This can actually make the hair look thicker with the right balance and dimension. Layering is done at different lengths, but usually blended not two or three layers as some people may think. All of this depends on the look you are looking for and the texture and thickness of the hair. Our stylists are highly trained in maximizing your hairs qualities.
Texture
Do you know what texture hair you have? Hairstylists typically classify hair into one of three texture types: coarse, medium, or fine. Texture refers to how the hair feels as well as how it is made, whether the strands are thinner and finer or thicker and coarser. Texturizing is a term used to cut into the style to help the hair fall into the style they are giving you. There are great professional products that help enhance the texture of the hair or in hair that is frizzy and needs some control. Our stylists are trained in recommending the best product for your hair from our Eufora, Daviness or Joico lines.
Volume
This hairstyling term refers to your hair’s body. If hair is left to fall flat, it can look drab and be unflattering to the wearer’s face shape. Adding volume to the hair gives it more body to make a more attractive and flattering style. Hairstylists can add volume by texturizing or layering and in some cases a permanent wave can be used to add texture into the hair. At home, you can create volume by using the right styling tools, styling techniques and professional products recommended for your hair type.
