Whether you’ve had many Brazilian waxes or have just made an appointment for your first one, preparation matters. Proper preparation can make your waxing appointment more comfortable and help you get the best possible results. If you’re new to Brazilian waxes, knowing what to expect will also help you walk into your appointment with more confidence. If you’ve made an appointment for a Brazilian wax at your favorite salon, here is what you need to know before you go.
Shaving before your appointment will make it impossible to wax.
Some people believe that shaving before a waxing appointment is preferred by waxing staff and that it will make the process more comfortable. In reality, shaving before you go will make you have to reschedule. Hair needs to be about a quarter-inch long for the wax to be effective, so avoid shaving for at least a week or two before your appointment.
You will need to undress from the waist down.
If you’ve had a bikini wax in the past, then you may remember having disposable underwear to wear for the appointment. For a Brazilian, you need to be completely undressed for the aesthetician to do his or her job. He or she will also need to handle sensitive areas of your body to thoroughly remove the hair. Although this may seem uncomfortable, it’s all part of the job for a professional aesthetician, so you don’t need to feel self-conscious.
It is normal to feel some discomfort afterwards.
Hair removal leaves skin with slight irritation, so it’s normal to feel sore and itchy and to have mild redness or even swelling. These symptoms should subside by the next day. In the meantime, avoid the beach and swimming, and consider using a hydrocortisone cream to encourage healing.
